Barbara Gabathuler studied the History of Art at the University of Geneva and obtained classical art training at a number of institutions, including the School of Decorative Arts in Geneva. Her techniques include oil on canvas, wood and handmade paper; sculpture; and installation. Since 1993, she has held numerous solo and group exhibitions in Switzerland, France and Canada. She is a member of Visarte, the professional association of Switzerland's visual artists. Gabathuler is also a jazz musician. Her artworks can be found in private and public collections in England, France, Japan, Jordan, Switzerland, Turkey and the United States.

"My artwork is essentially centered on the research of light, transparency, marks and imprints, colours, lines and textures. My paintings are inspired by jazz music and strive to possess their own musicality. Moreover, they speak of a passage between the interior and the exterior. They should be understood as suggestions rather than as obligations and certainties.

My train of thought has taken me to painting on steles [sculpted, inscribed stone or wooden pillars], in order to pursue and establish a real dialogue between these ‘sculptures' and my paintings."
