Nabad - pulse of the art scene

Jawad al Malhi received his MA in Fine Art from the Winchester School of Art, UK. His work over the years has focused on exploring communities and their relationship to their environments, local knowledge and everyday practices through painting, video, installation, sculpture and photography. His most recent works are based on close observation of the dynamics of crowds in public space and group formations, with particular focus on the moments after events and times of waiting. His work often explores the relationship between the still and moving images which aim to expose and bring  to the foreground a variety of viewpoints and challenge the position of audiences.


Recent solo exhibitions include, Is There a Place for Me Here?/Is There Any Room at the Inn? (Walled Off Hotel, 2017); House No. 197, (ERG, Brussels 2017); and Measures of Uncertainty, (Al Ma`mal Foundation 2014). Al Malhi participated in a large number of group exhibitions and fairs, including the Venice Biennale, 2009; Documenta 13, Kassel, Germany, 2012; and Art Dubai, 2016.


Al Malhi was shortlisted for the Frieze Foundation Cartier Award, and has been nominated for Prix Pictet. He was Artist-in-Residence at the Delfina Foundation with Solo Show of New Works 2010 and Artist-in-Residence at Mamaus Ecole Lisbon. He was also awarded the Accented Residency at the Townhouse Gallery Cairo (2011), and at IASPIS, Stockholm, (2017). His works are held in private and public collections in Europe and the Middle East, including, the British Museum, the Imperial War Museum, London, UK; the Pompidou Centre, France;  the Kamal Lazzar Foundation, Tunis; and the Barjeel Collection, UAE.  Since 2000 he has worked on various education projects in Jerusalem and the West Bank and in Europe, with children, youth and teachers. Jawad al Malhi lives and works in East Jerusalem.
