On 26 November 2012 at 6:00 pm, Nabad opens an exhibition of works by prominent Jordanian artist, Wijdan. She utilizes Arabic calligraphy in her artworks, with a particular focus on the Sufi concept of love. Wijdan’s artworks are an expression of what she believes are “the essential qualities of Islamic art that focus on spiritual representation.” This is Wijdan’s thirtieth solo exhibition. Her most recent solo shows were held at the Museum of Rome in Trastevere, Italy in 2010 and the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts in Amman in 2011. Her artworks have been shown in a large number of group exhibitions in different parts of the world.
In addition to her career as an artist, Wijdan al-Hashemi is an academic, an art curator and a former diplomat. She holds a Ph.D. in Islamic Art from SOAS, the University of London and is the author of eight books and numerous articles on traditional and contemporary art.
Wijdan’s works can be found in several public collections, including the British Museum and the Ashmolean Museum in the U.K.; the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. and the International Museum of Twenty-First Century Arts (TIMOTCA) in California; the National Art Gallery in Islamabad, Pakistan; and the Arab Museum of Modern Art in Qatar, among others. Her artworks have been acquired by private collectors in Asia, Africa, Europe, the United States and various countries of the Arab world. She has received a number of awards and honours from Jordan, France and Belgium for her artistic and cultural achievements. Wijdan currently lives and works in Amman.
